Chaplaincy - Trauma, Triage, and Transformation Level 3

Course Introduction

Trauma does more than create pain—it reshapes perception. Over time, wounds influence how people interpret the world, how they relate to God, and how they understand themselves. At this stage of chaplaincy, effective care requires more than presence and endurance; it requires discernment, precision, and spiritual clarity.

Chaplaincy: Trauma and Triage – Level 3 is the final course in the Trauma and Triage series and focuses on how trauma affects the soul, the mind, and the filters through which people process life. Building on Levels 1 and 2, this course equips chaplains to recognize distorted internal filters, understand what is coming through those filters, and minister healing that leads to lasting resolution rather than temporary relief.

Taught by Chaplain Mike Cowen alongside Janet Lister, RN, this level integrates Scripture, spiritual insight, and trauma-informed understanding to help chaplains minister deeply—without crossing boundaries or causing further harm.

What You’ll Learn

In this five-session course, you will explore:

The Division - This opening session establishes a biblical framework for understanding trauma through Hebrews 4:12. You will learn how trauma can create division between spirit, soul, and body, and how the Word of God functions with surgical precision—exposing, discerning, and dividing what trauma has entangled. This session sets the foundation for soul-level ministry rooted in Scripture rather than emotion or assumption.

Filters - Trauma creates internal filters that shape how people interpret truth, relationships, authority, and God Himself. This session helps chaplains understand how these filters form, why they persist, and how past wounds influence present perception. You will learn why two people can experience the same event and walk away with completely different internal realities.

What’s Coming Through the Filters - Building on the previous session, this teaching examines how filters affect behavior, reactions, coping mechanisms, and decision-making. You’ll learn how unresolved trauma produces predictable patterns and why surface-level responses often miss the true source of the issue. This session trains chaplains to look beyond symptoms and recognize what trauma is actually producing.

Healing, Recovery, and Restoration - Healing is not accidental—it is intentional and layered. This session focuses on how recovery takes place over time and how restoration involves rebuilding what trauma has distorted. You’ll learn how to walk with people through healing without rushing the process, forcing outcomes, or creating dependency, while remaining aligned with biblical truth and healthy boundaries.

Living Resolved - The final session centers on what it means to live resolved rather than reactive. You’ll learn how unresolved trauma keeps people cycling through pain, while resolution brings stability, clarity, and freedom. This session emphasizes long-term transformation, spiritual maturity, and the chaplain’s role in helping individuals move forward without remaining anchored to their trauma.

Why This Course Matters

Many people do not realize they are living through trauma-shaped filters. Without understanding these internal frameworks, chaplains may offer comfort without clarity or Scripture without discernment. This course equips chaplains to recognize how trauma reshapes perception and to minister healing that leads to genuine resolution.

Chaplaincy: Trauma and Triage – Level 3 provides tools for discerning what lies beneath behavior, guiding people toward restoration without becoming their substitute source of stability. It helps chaplains minister with wisdom, patience, and spiritual precision.
