Course Overview
Assisting Individuals in Crisis & Group Crisis Intervention, offered by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, Inc. (ICISF), is a comprehensive 3-day training that combines the essential core content of two foundational crisis intervention courses. This curriculum prepares students to serve as effective emotional first responders—applying structured, evidence-based tools during moments of acute crisis.
Unlike long-term counseling or psychotherapy, this training focuses on acute response and emotional first aid, equipping chaplains with the skills to provide immediate support to individuals and groups impacted by critical incidents and overwhelming stress.
As part of your Chaplaincy and Divinity education, this course helps you understand both individual and group crisis intervention, preparing you to support resilience, recovery, and healthy communal response in pastoral and institutional contexts.
What This Course Covers
This course presents the core elements of Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and equips you with practical tools that are directly applicable in real-world crisis settings.
You will learn:
- Fundamentals of Crisis Intervention — including psychological crisis, its definition, and the role of crisis intervention in acute response.
- Resistance, Resiliency, Recovery Continuum — how stress responses evolve and how intervention supports recovery.
- SAFER-Revised Model — a structured, evidence-based model used for effective individual crisis intervention.
- Basic Crisis Communication Techniques — essential skills for listening, stabilizing, and supporting individuals under stress.
- Group Crisis Intervention Techniques — including demobilizations, defusings, and Critical Incident Stress Debriefing (CISD) for collective trauma response.
- Practical Applications — how to recognize common psychological reactions to trauma and apply interventions ethically and appropriately.
This curriculum blends individual support with structured group modalities, making it especially valuable for chaplains working in schools, hospitals, first responder agencies, congregations, or communities facing crisis.
